Where it came from
Season of Loss was released in 2024 as part of the Bloomburrow expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set is notable for its departure from standard humanoid fantasy, focusing instead on a plane inhabited entirely by anthropomorphic animals. This card was designed as a thematic representation of the somber, cyclical nature of the harvest season, fitting into the set's narrative arc concerning the balance between life and decay within the woodland realm.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Irina Nordsol Kuzmina, who sought to capture a poignant, reflective mood that resonates with the 'Season' cycle in the game. By depicting a quiet, naturalistic scene of mourning or transition rather than an explosive combat moment, the art emphasizes the emotional weight of the card's mechanics. It was well-received by players for its atmospheric quality, which successfully grounded the whimsical aesthetic of the Bloomburrow setting in a more reflective, melancholic tone.
