Where it came from
Season of Loss was released in 2024 as part of the Bloomburrow set for Magic: The Gathering. The card draws upon the set's central theme of an anthropomorphic woodland realm, utilizing a cozy, storybook aesthetic that contrasts with the darker, more melancholy nature of the card's effect. This specific version is a promotional variant, designed to showcase the artistic direction of the set, which emphasizes folk-tale illustration styles.
The art for this cycle of cards was developed to evoke a sense of high-fantasy charm while maintaining the gravity required for the game mechanics. By blending traditional watercolor-inspired techniques with modern digital rendering, the illustrators sought to capture the fleeting, seasonal transitions central to the Bloomburrow narrative. Upon its release, this card was well-received by players for its thematic consistency and its visual departure from the more aggressive, combat-focused imagery found in other Magic sets.
