Seething Anger

Seething Anger was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a common red enchantment, it introduced the 'buyback' mechanic to the game, allowing players to return the card to their hand upon resolving the spell if an additional cost was paid. This design was intended to provide a repeatable source of damage and pump effects, reflecting the aggressive, volatile nature of the color red in the game's color pie.

The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators in the early history of the game. Rush utilized his signature high-contrast style to depict the raw, elemental frustration implied by the card's name. Upon its release, it became a staple of Limited formats and casual play, as the buyback mechanic proved to be an efficient, albeit mana-intensive, way to maintain board pressure throughout the mid-to-late stages of a match.
