Where it came from
Lancers en-Kor was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It belongs to the 'en-Kor' creature cycle, a group of soldiers from the plane of Rath distinguished by their ability to redirect damage dealt to them to other creatures under the player's control. This mechanic was a core feature of the set, emphasizing tactical defensive maneuvers and synergy within white-aligned decks.
The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a prominent fantasy artist known for his realistic and atmospheric style. Giancola’s design for the Lancers focuses on the regal yet battle-hardened aesthetic of the Kor people, utilizing a muted, classical composition that emphasizes their unique armor and weaponry. Upon its release, the card became a staple in defensive white deck strategies, valued for its utility in mitigating damage during complex combat sequences.
