Where it came from
Temper was released in 1998 as part of the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a white instant, it served as a tactical combat trick designed to punish opponents for overextending their board state during combat, reflecting the game's shift toward more reactive and strategic play patterns during the Rath cycle.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Terese Nielsen, who was a prominent contributor to the game's visual identity during the late nineties. Her design for Temper employs a dynamic, ethereal style typical of her work for the set, aiming to convey the card's theme of controlled aggression and divine intervention within the game's high-fantasy world.
