Where it came from
Selesnya Sagittars was released in 2005 as part of the Ravnica: City of Guilds set, the inaugural expansion for the Ravnica block in Magic: The Gathering. As a common card representing the Selesnya Conclave, it was designed to showcase the guild's focus on collective strength and nature-aligned defensive capabilities within the urban landscape of Ravnica.
The artwork was illustrated by Luca Zontini, who captured the stoic, arboreal aesthetic of the Selesnya archers. The design sought to emphasize the reach and vigilance associated with the guild's role as the protectors of the city's verdant areas. Upon its release, the card was widely utilized in Limited formats for its utility as a reliable reach creature against flying threats.
