Where it came from
Semester's End was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set within the multiversal university of Strixhaven, the card reflects the mechanics of the game's arcane academic theme, specifically focusing on the moment students conclude their studies and prepare for the cycle of learning to begin anew. Mechanically, the card allows players to exile their permanents and return them to the battlefield at the end of the turn, mimicking the chaotic yet structured magical energy found within the campus.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the fantasy art community known for her meticulous attention to light and character expression. Villeneuve designed the piece to capture the ethereal, celebratory transition of the school year, utilizing a vibrant color palette that aligns with the aesthetic identity of the Silverquill and Prismari colleges. Upon its release, the card was noted for its utility in Commander and other eternal formats, earning praise from players for its versatility and its ability to trigger enter-the-battlefield effects.
