Where it came from
Serra's Blessing was first introduced in the Weatherlight expansion in 1997, representing the divine protective magic associated with the character Serra. Its inclusion in the Classic Sixth Edition set in 1999 marked a significant moment for the game, as this core set introduced updated rules and a modernized card frame, solidifying the card's status as a staple for white-aligned decks that focused on defensive stability and creature permanence.
The artwork for this version was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic figures in the early history of the game. His design sought to capture the ethereal, radiant nature of angelic protection, utilizing a soft, luminous aesthetic that contrasted with the more aggressive imagery found elsewhere in the set. It was well-received by players for its thematic consistency and its practical utility in governing the board state, maintaining its relevance long after its initial printing.
