Plains

The Plains card from the Magic: The Gathering Classic Sixth Edition set was released in 1999, marking a transition period for the game as Wizards of the Coast sought to streamline rules and update the visual identity of their core sets. As a basic land, this card was fundamental to the game's economy, providing the white mana necessary for play. It was designed as a mass-produced entry point, ensuring that players had reliable access to foundational resources while reflecting the game's ongoing aesthetic evolution during its foundational years.

The artwork for this specific printing, created by the artist John Avon, is celebrated for its serene and expansive landscape composition. Avon sought to capture the essence of a peaceful, open field under a vast sky, a signature style that brought a sense of atmospheric depth to the basic land slots. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the player base, solidifying Avon's reputation as a quintessential landscape artist for the franchise and setting a high standard for subsequent basic land illustrations.
