Where it came from
The Serra's Emissary art card was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 Art Series, a promotional subset designed to highlight the high-fidelity illustrations featured in the Magic: The Gathering expansion set. These cards serve as collectible showcase pieces, stripping away the game mechanics and text boxes to allow the artwork to occupy the entire frame, often featuring a foil-stamped artist signature on the front.
The illustration itself was rendered by artist Greg Rutkowski, known for his dramatic lighting and epic fantasy aesthetic. In the context of the game's lore, the Emissary represents an agent of Serra, the benevolent creator deity of the plane of Serra's Realm. Rutkowski’s design emphasizes the ethereal, luminous quality associated with the character, aiming to evoke a sense of divine protection and celestial authority that reflects the card's function as a powerful protector in gameplay.
