Where it came from
Seton's Desire was released in 2001 as part of the Odyssey expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set marked a shift in the game's design philosophy, focusing on a graveyard-centric mechanic called threshold, which rewarded players for having seven or more cards in their graveyard. The card itself reflects the dark, mystical aesthetic that defined the Odyssey block, which was set on the plane of Otaria.
The card was illustrated by the artist Dave Dorman, a figure well known in the science fiction and fantasy illustration community, particularly for his extensive work on the Star Wars franchise. Dorman employed his signature painterly style to capture the intense and ethereal nature of the card's effect. Upon its release, it was regarded as a niche utility card, valued by players for its potential to provide card advantage in specific graveyard-focused deck builds.
