Where it came from
Seton, Krosan Protector was released in the 2001 Odyssey expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Wizards of the Coast, the Odyssey set explored themes of graveyard interaction and high-mana costs, set against the backdrop of the post-apocalyptic continent of Otaria. The character of Seton represents the Krosan druids, a faction dedicated to protecting the ancient and sentient Krosan Forest from the encroachment of magical instability.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Carl Critchlow, who utilized a detailed, textured style to depict the centaur druid amidst the lush, dense foliage of his domain. Critchlow was a frequent contributor to the game during this era, and his interpretation of Seton emphasized the character's role as a scholarly guardian rather than a traditional warrior. Upon release, the card was recognized for its unique ability to turn druid creatures into mana sources, offering a niche but respected utility in tribal-themed deck construction.
