Where it came from
Sewer Crocodile was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set is themed around a 1920s-inspired, Art Deco metropolis controlled by five competing demon-led crime families. This particular card was designed to populate the grimy, dangerous underbelly of the city, serving as a functional creature card that reinforces the set's focus on urban intrigue and environmental hazards.
The card features illustration by Campbell White, who captured the creature emerging from the city's murky wastewater pipes. The design aesthetic draws heavily from noir tropes and the pulp magazines of the early twentieth century, aiming to contrast the opulent high-rises of New Capenna with the neglected infrastructure below. It was received by players as a typical common-rarity utility card, intended primarily for Limited play formats where it provides a sturdy, aggressive presence on the battlefield.
