Where it came from
Tenacious Underdog was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna set for Magic: The Gathering. The set draws heavy thematic inspiration from the art deco aesthetic and the organized crime tropes of the 1920s, centering on the titular city controlled by five warring demon-led families. This specific card represents the grit and relentless ambition of the city's lower-class citizens, a narrative thread woven throughout the expansion's world-building.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who emphasized a sense of kinetic, desperate energy to match the character's ability to return from the graveyard. The design team created the card to function as a recurring threat that drains a player's life total, reflecting the high-stakes cost of survival in the brutal streets of New Capenna. It was well-received by players for its efficiency and versatility, becoming a staple in competitive formats shortly after its debut.
