Where it came from
Shadow of the Second Sun was introduced as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2024. The card was designed as a high-cost enchantment that functions as an engine for mana and card advantage, specifically intended to support control-oriented decks by duplicating the triggered abilities that occur during the beginning of the end step.
The card’s aesthetic and thematic identity draw from the lore of Amonkhet, a plane defined by its desert landscape and the cyclical nature of its suns. The illustration, created by artist Magali Villeneuve, captures the atmospheric tension of the plane’s second sun rising, utilizing a signature style that emphasizes scale and ethereal light to ground the card within the visual history of the setting.
