Where it came from
Shadow of the Second Sun was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Wizards of the Coast designed the Modern Horizons series to introduce cards directly into the Modern format, bypassing standard set legality. This particular card draws inspiration from the mythology of the plane of Amonkhet, specifically referencing the apocalyptic arrival of the God-Pharaoh Bolas and the resulting celestial upheaval.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Tuan Duong Chu, who aimed to evoke the surreal, ominous atmosphere of a sun eclipsed by magical forces. By utilizing bold color palettes and stark silhouettes, the design captures the tension and weight of the set's narrative stakes. Upon release, the card was received as a versatile mechanical tool for control-oriented strategies, praised by players for its unique ability to grant an additional beginning phase to its controller.
