Where it came from
Shadowspear was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering expansion set, Theros Beyond Death, which returned players to a Greek mythology-inspired plane. The item serves as a key narrative artifact tied to the planeswalker Ashiok, who crafted the weapon from the nightmares of the gods to weaken their influence. Designed to provide a powerful offensive and defensive edge, its mechanics allow players to strip hexproof and indestructible from opponents, reflecting its role as a tool of divine subversion.
The promotional version, designated 236s, features unique borderless art that highlights the spear's ethereal and unsettling aesthetic. This version was released as a 'Buy-a-Box' promo, intended to incentivize players to purchase full display boxes of the set upon its release. The card was received positively by the competitive community for its versatility in Commander and Modern formats, becoming a staple equipment card that solidified its value within the game's secondary market.
