Where it came from
The Shapeshifter token, designated as collector number 24 in the Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion for Magic: The Gathering, was released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022. It was designed to function as a supplementary game piece for cards within the set that create creature tokens, specifically those that require a flexible entity capable of mimicking the characteristics of other cards on the battlefield.
The artistic direction for this token follows the aesthetic established for the Dungeons & Dragons crossover set, prioritizing the high-fantasy visual language associated with the Forgotten Realms. As with most token cards in the series, it was produced as a utilitarian tool to assist players in tracking board states during gameplay rather than as a primary collectible, though it remains a staple for players utilizing the specific mechanics found in the Baldur's Gate expansion.
