Where it came from
The Shapeshifter card was released in 2022 as part of the Secret Lair x MSCHF drop, a collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and the art collective MSCHF. The card is a functional reprint of the classic card 'Ditto' from the original 1994 Magic: The Gathering set, famously known for its unique ability to become a copy of any creature on the battlefield. This release was intended to highlight the unconventional and boundary-pushing ethos that defines the MSCHF brand, blending high-concept art with functional game pieces.
The design of this specific card features the stark, minimalist aesthetic characteristic of the MSCHF collaborative series, intended to stand out from the traditional fantasy art style of the broader game. By utilizing the 'Shapeshifter' moniker and a refined visual layout, the designers aimed to strip back the game to its essential mechanics. The release was received with significant interest within the hobby, primarily for its rarity and its role as a subversive commentary on the collectibility and secondary market value of vintage game cards.
