Provenance

Where it came from

The Shapeshifter card, featured in the Secret Lair Drop series as collector number 1909, serves as an homage to the classic card of the same name from Magic: The Gathering’s foundational Alpha set. Originally released in 1993, the card was an early exploration of creature flexibility, allowing players to assign power and toughness at the time of casting. This updated version was produced for a specialized Secret Lair drop, a series designed by Wizards of the Coast to offer fans curated, artistically distinct reprints of iconic cards.

The design for this specific release leans into a stylized, modern aesthetic, intentionally contrasting with the minimalist, whimsical tone of the original 1990s illustration. By engaging contemporary artists to reinterpret these vintage mechanics, the Secret Lair program aims to bridge the gap between Magic’s nostalgic history and the current visual landscape of the trading card game. Upon release, it was well-received by collectors who prioritize artistic variation and the preservation of early game mechanics within a refreshed visual context.
