Provenance

Where it came from

The Sheep token was released in 1998 as part of the Unglued expansion, the first set in Magic: The Gathering history dedicated entirely to parody and meta-humor. These tokens were created to support cards like 'Squirrel Farm' and 'Ovinomancer,' which required players to represent unique creature types on the battlefield. Given the set's irreverent nature, the art direction leaned into a whimsical, cartoonish aesthetic that broke from the game's then-standard high-fantasy visual identity.

The artwork for this token was provided by Christopher Rush, one of the game's most iconic early contributors. Rush, who famously illustrated the original Black Lotus, adopted a playful, simple style for the Unglued tokens to match the lighthearted spirit of the set. While the card was initially received as a quirky novelty, it has since become a cherished piece of Magic history, representing a time when the game began to experiment with its own internal tropes and humor.
