Where it came from
The Zombie token from the 1998 Unglued set was released by Wizards of the Coast as part of the first-ever standalone expansion for Magic: The Gathering consisting entirely of parody and silver-bordered cards. It was created to provide players with a physical representation of the creature type generated by various cards in the set, moving away from the previous tradition of using improvised markers like coins or slips of paper.
The art was illustrated by Christopher Rush, a legendary figure in the game's early history who is perhaps most famous for his iconic illustration of the Black Lotus. Rush designed the token with a classic, illustrative horror aesthetic that leaned into the campy, comedic spirit of Unglued, grounding the set's humorous tone in the traditional high-fantasy art style that defined the early years of the trading card game.
