Where it came from
Sheoldred // The True Scriptures was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine set for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a pivotal narrative moment in the Phyrexian invasion storyline, depicting the Praetor Sheoldred's transformation into a saga. Its design integrates the double-faced card mechanic, allowing players to transition from a legendary creature into a powerful enchantment that mirrors the character's narrative evolution during the New Phyrexia arc.
The art was rendered by the illustrator Kev Walker, a long-standing contributor to the game known for his dark and visceral aesthetic. Walker’s depiction focuses on the grotesque, biomechanical nature of the Phyrexians, aiming to capture the essence of horror and decay central to their faction's identity. The card was well-received by players and collectors alike for its mechanical complexity and the thematic resonance of its flip-side transformation, which serves as a visual storytelling device for the climax of the multi-year Phyrexian saga.
