Where it came from
Shield Mare was released as part of the Foundations Jumpstart set, a product line designed to be accessible for new players while offering thematic consistency for established fans of Magic: The Gathering. As a card within the Jumpstart ecosystem, it serves as a self-contained deck-building component meant to facilitate quick, balanced gameplay sessions without the need for extensive deck construction.
The card features artwork that reflects the high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the game's broader design philosophy, emphasizing a sturdy, protective creature archetype. Its visual identity was crafted to fit seamlessly into the White color identity of the set, focusing on defensive capabilities and creature-based synergy, which has been a staple of the game's mechanics since its inception.
