Where it came from
Vilis, Broker of Blood was originally introduced in the Core Set 2020 expansion, reflecting a shift in Magic: The Gathering design toward high-mana, high-impact legendary creatures that appeal to Commander players. The card was designed to embody the philosophy of black mana, centering on the mechanical trade-off of paying life to draw cards. Its inclusion in Foundations Jumpstart, where it retains its original identity and collector number 70, serves to maintain its availability in modern play environments while reinforcing the card's status as a quintessential engine for graveyard and resource-management strategies.
The visual identity of Vilis was crafted to evoke a sense of imposing, demonic dread, drawing on classic gothic horror influences common in the game's broader aesthetic. The creature's illustration emphasizes a dark, skeletal elegance that aligns with its function as a broker of blood, utilizing a color palette dominated by deep purples and crimsons. Upon its release, the card received significant attention for its raw power level, quickly becoming a staple in casual and competitive formats for its ability to turn life totals into an insurmountable card advantage.
