Where it came from
Shielding Plax was released in 2006 as part of the Dissension set, the final installment in the original Ravnica: City of Guilds block for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents the Simic Combine, one of the ten iconic guilds of the plane of Ravnica. As a card tied to the Simic guild, it reflects the faction's focus on biological manipulation and the protection of their living experiments through reactive, defensive enchantments.
The artwork was created by illustrator Vance Kovacs, who utilized a distinct, painterly style to depict the fluid, mutagenic aesthetic associated with the Simic identity. The design captures the essence of the card's mechanical effect—granting shroud to a creature—by visualizing a protective, viscous layer of graft-matter. It was received as a functional utility piece in limited play environments, valued for its ability to neutralize targeted removal spells during competitive matches.
