Provenance

Where it came from

Shielding Plax was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set, which was integrated into the broader Forgotten Realms expansion cycle for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the set's focus on multiplayer Commander play, specifically emphasizing the protection of key creatures in a high-variance, social tabletop environment.

The illustration, created by artist Antonio José Manzanedo, depicts a protective magical barrier cast over a creature. Manzanedo aimed to capture the classic aesthetic of Dungeons & Dragons spellcasting, utilizing a high-fantasy visual language that bridges the gap between the card game's mechanics and the lore of the Forgotten Realms campaign setting. The card has been recognized by players for its utility in shielding high-value threats from targeted removal spells.
