Where it came from
Shifting Woodland was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a land card designed specifically for the Modern format, it was conceived to provide players with a utility-focused option that synergizes with graveyard-reliant strategies. The card’s mechanics allow it to temporarily become a copy of a permanent in the player's graveyard, reflecting the set's broader theme of powerful, complex interactions that push the boundaries of established formats.
The card features artwork by illustrator Lucas Graciano, who utilized a moody, atmospheric style to capture the shifting, ethereal nature of the landscape. The design aims to evoke a sense of ancient, magical woods that possess the capacity to reshape themselves. Upon its release, the card was received with interest by competitive players who appreciated its versatility as a land that can adopt the abilities of fallen key permanents, cementing its status as a staple in various deck archetypes.
