Provenance

Where it came from

Shifting Wall was originally introduced in the Stronghold expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in early 1998. Designed as part of the Rath block, the card reflects the set's thematic focus on the artificial, plane-shifting world of Rath and the unstable nature of its environment. Mechanically, the card allows players to adjust its power and toughness by spending mana, a design choice meant to provide tactical flexibility in the mid-to-late game.

The artwork was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic artists in the early history of the game. His illustration captures the card's theme of fluidity and architectural transformation, utilizing a gritty, fantasy-realist style consistent with the aesthetic of late 90s Wizards of the Coast releases. It was later included in 'The List', a rotating curation of cards from Magic's history that appear in Set Boosters, designed to introduce newer players to legacy cards and mechanics.
