Where it came from
Shifting Woodland was introduced as part of the Modern Horizons 3 set in 2024, designed to expand the utility of land cards in the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. As a cycle of utility lands intended for high-power formats, it was crafted to provide players with a repeatable method for graveyard interaction and board state manipulation. Its development reflects Wizards of the Coast’s strategy of releasing supplemental sets that introduce new mechanics and powerful utility cards directly into the Modern format.
The illustrative design of the card, featuring the work of artist Jason Felix, captures the ethereal and transformative nature of the woodland setting. The artwork emphasizes the concept of shifting environments through a vibrant, saturated color palette that highlights the card's ability to copy permanents from the graveyard. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its technical versatility, quickly becoming a staple in various deck archetypes due to its efficiency as a land that can mimic powerful legendary permanents.
