While it's true most dragons are cruel, the Shivan dragon seems to take particular glee in the misery of others, often tormenting its victims much like a cat plays with a mouse before delivering the final blow.

Where it came from
The oversized Shivan Dragon promo, designated as number 5 in the series, was released during the mid-1990s as a promotional display piece for the burgeoning Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These cards were produced significantly larger than standard gaming cards, intended primarily for store displays and event organizers to draw attention to the game's iconic creatures in retail environments. At the time, Shivan Dragon was widely considered the quintessential powerhouse of the game, representing the high-impact red cards that defined early competitive play.
The artwork featured on this oversized card is the classic illustration by Melissa Benson, whose original Shivan Dragon design became one of the most recognizable images in fantasy gaming history. Benson's work on this piece sought to capture the ferocious, elemental nature of the dragon, utilizing a style that emphasized a sharp, visceral aesthetic popular in the era's fantasy art. The piece was well-received by the player base, solidifying the dragon's status as a cultural icon for the game and ensuring its recurring presence in promotional material for years to come.
