While it's true most Dragons are cruel, the Shivan Dragon seems to take particular glee in the misery of others, often tormenting its victims much like a cat plays with a mouse before delivering the final blow.

Where it came from
The Shivan Dragon card has served as a foundational icon of the Magic: The Gathering trading card game since its original appearance in the 1993 Alpha set. As a staple of early gameplay, it defined the archetype of a high-cost, high-reward flying creature. This specific printing was released as part of the 2022 Secret Lair Countdown Kit, an advent-style collection designed to celebrate the game's anniversary by reissuing influential cards with commemorative, retro-inspired aesthetic treatments.
This version of the card features updated art that pays homage to the original style while adhering to the modern, polished visual language of the Secret Lair series. The release was aimed at long-term players and collectors seeking a premium memento of the game’s history. Upon its release, the set was received as a significant collector’s item, valued primarily for its scarcity and its role in honoring the legacy of the Shivan Dragon within the broader Magic: The Gathering multiverse.
