Where it came from
The Shivan Dragon appeared in the 1994 Summer Magic set, also colloquially known as Edgar. This set was intended to be a corrected reprint of Revised Edition, designed to fix various errors, color balance issues, and copyright dates. However, the print run itself was plagued by a series of high-profile printing blunders, leading Wizards of the Coast to recall and destroy the vast majority of the stock before it reached store shelves.
The art for this iconic card was originally commissioned from Melissa Benson, whose depiction of the dragon became a cornerstone of early Magic: The Gathering imagery.
