Where it came from
Sidar Jabari of Zhalfir was released in 2023 as part of the March of the Machine Commander set. This card represents a pivotal moment in Magic: The Gathering lore, depicting the legendary Zhalfirin leader as he and his realm are phased back into the main plane of existence to join the final defense against the Phyrexians. The card was designed to mechanically support a knight-themed deck, utilizing an eminence ability that emphasizes the historical military prowess associated with his character.
The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Magali Villeneuve, a frequent contributor to the franchise known for her high-fantasy style and character-focused compositions. Villeneuve opted for a dynamic, heroic depiction of Jabari, capturing his command presence amidst the chaos of the invasion. Upon release, the card was well-received by the player community for its cohesive synergy with tribal-focused archetypes and its significance in bringing a long-dormant historical figure back to the forefront of the game’s narrative.
