Where it came from
Siege Veteran was released as part of the promotional suite for the Magic: The Gathering set The Brothers' War, which debuted in late 2022. The set serves as a narrative retelling of the conflict between Urza and Mishra, two iconic figures in the game's expansive lore. This specific card, bearing the collector number 25p, features unique promotional foil treatment designed to highlight the high-stakes, mechanical nature of the conflict depicted in the set's aesthetic.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Lie Setiawan, who utilized a bold, painterly style to capture the resilience of soldiers engaged in the grueling trench warfare characteristic of the Brothers' War era. The design intent was to emphasize the protective, battlefield-commander role of the unit, creating a visual synergy between the card's mechanical ability to bolster creatures and its thematic depiction of a veteran leader rallying troops amidst the debris of magical artillery.
