Where it came from
Sigil of the Empty Throne was originally printed in the 2009 Alara Reborn expansion, designed as a powerful payoff for enchantment-heavy decks. Within the lore of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, the card represents the vacant throne of Alara, a plane that was fractured into five shards and later rejoined. The design intent was to provide players with a high-impact, late-game enchantment that generates significant board presence whenever other enchantments are cast.
This specific printing comes from the 2016 Planechase Anthology, a collection that bundled the various decks from the earlier Planechase releases. The artwork, provided by Greg Staples, captures the ethereal and ominous nature of the throne, utilizing a muted, mystical color palette to evoke the feeling of a power vacuum in a high-fantasy setting. It has been well-regarded by the Commander community for its steady efficiency in enchantment-focused strategies.
