Where it came from
Silverclad Ferocidons were released as part of the Rivals of Ixalan set in early 2018, specifically appearing as a promotional card for the set's prerelease events. In the lore of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse, the card represents a gargantuan, metal-plated dinosaur from the plane of Ixalan, a setting heavily inspired by Mesoamerican cultures and age-of-discovery exploration. The card is mechanically significant for its ability to punish opponents whenever they interact with the board, reflecting the hazardous nature of the plane's prehistoric wildlife.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Zack Stella. His design emphasizes the creature's formidable presence and the unique, crystalline or metallic growths that distinguish the species within the game's creature type. The card was well-received by players focusing on red-aligned tribal decks, particularly those built around the dinosaur creature type, as it provided a high-impact threat that rewarded players for aggressively deploying their resources during gameplay.
