Sima Yi, Wei Field Marshal was released in 1999 as part of the Portal Three Kingdoms set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set was specifically designed to introduce the game to the Asian market by adapting the historical narrative of the 14th-century Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Wizards of the Coast utilized this source material to create a distinct expansion that departed from the traditional Western fantasy settings typical of the game at the time.

The card was illustrated by Japanese artist Gao Yan, who was commissioned to provide a stylized, traditional depiction of the influential strategist. Within the game mechanics, the card introduced the horsemanship keyword, a thematic representation of battlefield mobility meant to mirror the historical military maneuvers of the Three Kingdoms era. While the set had a limited print run and initial distribution, it became highly sought after in later years due to its unique flavor and the scarcity of its cards in the secondary market.
