Provenance

Where it came from

Sindbad was originally printed in the Arabian Nights expansion in 1993, the first set released for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed during a period when Wizards of the Coast drew heavy thematic inspiration from Middle Eastern folklore and the tales of One Thousand and One Nights. The card functions as a resource-management tool, allowing players to draw cards at the cost of discarding lands, reflecting the nomadic, treasure-seeking nature of the legendary sailor.

The version from the Fourth Edition core set, released in 1995, features artwork by Julie Baroh. Baroh’s illustration depicts the character in a style consistent with the early fantasy aesthetic of the mid-1990s. While Fourth Edition marked a shift toward standardized card frames and broader availability for players, the Sindbad card remained a niche inclusion that served to preserve the flavor of the original Arabian Nights release for a new generation of collectors.
