Sindbad

Sindbad was released in 1993 as part of Arabian Nights, the first expansion set for the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the set was inspired by the folklore of the One Thousand and One Nights. It introduced the concept of expansion sets and was notable for its distinct thematic focus, setting a precedent for how future sets would incorporate top-down design based on specific literary or historical mythologies.

The card illustration was commissioned from artist Julie Baroh, who provided a whimsical, painterly aesthetic that characterized much of the game's early visual identity. As an uncommon creature card, it was designed with a unique ability that allowed players to discard cards to potentially draw more, reflecting the unpredictable nature of the titular character's voyages. While it did not become a staple in tournament-level competitive play, it remains a nostalgic artifact of the game's formative era and the unique creative period that defined the Arabian Nights expansion.
