What it does

When this creature dies, you may exile it and put three time counters on it. If you do, exile up to one target creature and put three time counters on it. Each card exiled this way that doesn't have suspend gains suspend. (For each card with suspend, its owner removes a time counter from it at the beginning of their upkeep. When the last is removed, they may cast it without paying its mana cost. Those creature spells have haste.)

Provenance

Where it came from

Sinister Concierge was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set, a collection themed around the art deco-inspired, mob-ruled metropolis of New Capenna. Within the game's lore, the card represents the shadowy gatekeepers who facilitate the underworld dealings of the city's various crime families. It serves as a mechanical utility piece designed to disrupt combat flow by forcing creatures to lose their ability to attack, reflecting the concierge's role in controlling access and movement within the city's high-stakes establishments.

The visual identity of the card was crafted by illustrator Tomas Duchek, who utilized a moody, cinematic lighting style to emphasize the character's imposing presence. Duchek focused on the juxtaposition of formal attire against a background of corruption, capturing the specific noir aesthetic that defined the visual language of the New Capenna expansion. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its niche but effective board control capabilities in multiplayer formats, fitting neatly into decks that focus on political maneuvering and defense.
