Where it came from
Siren's Call was originally printed in the 1994 Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield. The card was created as a blue instant that allowed a player to force all of an opponent's creatures to attack, a mechanic intended to disrupt defensive strategies and punish players who preferred to keep their creatures untapped. The artwork, provided by Jesper Myhrvold, depicts a haunting, ethereal figure intended to evoke the mythological danger of a siren luring sailors to their doom.
The International Collectors' Edition version, released in 1993, was a non-tournament legal set intended for promotional purposes and collectors. These cards are distinguished by their gold-bordered backs and square corners, which set them apart from standard tournament cards. While this edition was initially met with mixed reactions due to its lack of legal play status, it has since become a sought-after piece of gaming history for its unique aesthetic and its role in the early archival efforts of Wizards of the Coast.
