What it does
Look at target opponent's hand and choose a card from it. You control that player until Word of Command finishes resolving. The player plays that card if able. While doing so, the player can activate mana abilities only if they're from lands that player controls and only if mana they produce is spent to activate other mana abilities of lands the player controls and/or to play that card. If the chosen card is cast as a spell, you control the player while that spell is resolving.

Where it came from
Word of Command was originally released in the 1993 Limited Edition Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering. As one of the game's earliest rare cards, it was designed by Richard Garfield to showcase the unique mechanics of the spell-dueling system, allowing a player to take control of an opponent's turn to cast a spell. The card is notoriously difficult to play due to its complex rules interactions, which led to it being excluded from most competitive formats shortly after its introduction.
The International Collectors' Edition version, released in 1993, was intended as a non-tournament-legal display set for the European market. These cards are distinguished by their gold-bordered backs and square corners. While the original artwork by Christopher Rush remains iconic within the hobby, this specific printing serves primarily as a collector's piece, offering players a way to own a piece of early Magic history that remains visually distinct from the standard tournament-legal versions.
