Where it came from
Sisay's Ingenuity was released in February 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set explored the collision of the plane of Dominaria with the artificial plane of Rath, continuing the narrative of the Weatherlight Saga. The card is named after Captain Sisay, a central figure in the game's lore who commanded the skyship Weatherlight during the Phyrexian invasion.
The card features artwork by artist Donato Giancola, known for his classical approach to fantasy illustration. Giancola's design depicts the strategic depth associated with the Weatherlight's crew, utilizing a rich, painterly style that contrasts with the more digital aesthetic beginning to emerge in the game at the time. It was received as a functional, if niche, piece of utility within the blue color identity, designed primarily to support the game's broader mechanical focus on card advantage and deck manipulation.
