Provenance

Where it came from

Aurora Griffin was released in 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed as the second set in the Invasion block, Planeshift focused on the conflict between the plane of Dominaria and the invading Phyrexian forces. The card was designed as a common-rarity creature to provide players with a reliable white-aligned flying unit, fitting into the set's thematic emphasis on multicolored mechanics and diverse creature types.

The artwork for Aurora Griffin was commissioned from the Argentine fantasy artist Ciruelo Cabral, widely known simply as Ciruelo. Drawing upon his signature style characterized by highly detailed, ethereal depictions of mythical beasts, Ciruelo illustrated the griffin with a focus on its luminous, avian-lion features. The design was intended to evoke the celestial nature of the creature within the game's high-fantasy setting and was well-received by players for its atmospheric aesthetic, which stood out as a highlight among the common cards in the set.
