Provenance

Where it came from

The Skeleton Pirate token was released in 2023 as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. These tokens were produced by Wizards of the Coast to support gameplay mechanics within the set, specifically appearing as the primary token generated by cards like Pirate's Pillage and other effects themed around the subterranean, mesoamerican-inspired landscape of Ixalan.

The artwork for this token was commissioned to align with the set's aesthetic shift toward dark, fossil-filled caverns and deep-earth exploration. Illustrators for the Ixalan sets generally emphasize rugged, weathered textures and high-contrast lighting, designed to evoke a sense of perilous adventure that fits the pirate-themed factions of the plane.
