Where it came from
Skullclamp was released in the 2004 Magic: The Gathering expansion Darksteel. Designed by Bill Rose, the card was intended to provide card advantage for creature-based decks, but its development balance was significantly altered late in the design process. The final iteration, which allowed players to draw two cards upon the equipped creature's death for a very low mana cost, proved to be far more powerful than the development team anticipated.
The card is widely considered one of the most powerful artifacts in the history of the game. Its dominance in tournament formats was so pervasive that it was officially banned in several competitive formats shortly after its release. The stark, macabre illustration by Christopher Rush became iconic, representing the high-risk, high-reward nature of its mechanics and securing its place as a legendary piece of Magic design history.
