Provenance

Where it came from

Skullclamp was originally introduced in the 2004 set Darksteel, designed by Erik Lauer. It is widely considered one of the most powerful artifacts in the history of Magic: The Gathering due to its efficient mana cost and ability to draw cards upon a creature's death. Its inclusion in the 2011 Commander preconstructed decks served to reintroduce this iconic and controversial card to a new generation of players, cementing its status as a staple for deck-building strategies that rely on sacrificing creatures for value.

The art for the card was created by Miho Midorikawa. Her illustration captures a macabre, visceral aesthetic that aligns with the artifact's function: clamping onto a creature to extract power at the cost of its life. The design reflects the brutal, industrial tone of the Mirrodin plane, where mechanical and organic elements fused in unsettling ways. Upon its initial release, the card was so dominant in competitive play that it was swiftly banned in several formats, earning it a legendary reputation that persists today.
