Provenance

Where it came from

Skullclamp was originally released in the 2004 set Darksteel, designed by the Magic: The Gathering research and development team. It was conceived as a card-draw engine that utilized creatures as a resource, but it was significantly undercosted for its power level. The card became an immediate, format-defining staple, leading to its emergency banning in the Standard format shortly after its introduction.

This specific printing appears in the 2009 premium box set From the Vault: Exiled. The set was curated to feature powerful cards that had been banned or restricted throughout the game's history. The art, illustrated by Doug Chaffee, depicts a macabre mechanical device, capturing the brutal efficiency of the card's effect. Within the collector community, this version is appreciated for its unique foil treatment and its role in commemorating the card's controversial legacy.
