Where it came from
Sky Tether was released in early 2019 as part of the Ravnica Allegiance expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a common-rarity enchantment, it was designed as a functional piece of removal for the Limited format, specifically reflecting the tactical nature of the Azorius Senate guild. Its mechanical role is to pacify creatures by pinning them to the ground, a flavor choice that aligns with the guild's focus on law, order, and control within the dense cityscape of Ravnica.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrators who focused on the characteristic architecture and magical aesthetic of Ravnica. The design emphasizes the ethereal chains and restrictive enchantments favored by the Azorius, utilizing a visual language of blue and white energy to convey its mechanical effect. Upon its release, the card was received as a standard utility piece, appreciated by players for its efficiency in slowing down aggressive strategies during draft and sealed events.
